Dear Parents/Carers,
It finally looks as if spring is on its way:
1. SPORTS NEWS: 1) SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS COUNTY FINALS a)On 9/3/11 our 24 Y5/6 athletes, accompanied by Morris and Fiona Westwood, as Wandsworth Champions, represented the borough in the Inner London County finals in Brixton for the second successive year. Cheered on by our brilliant parents, our excellent run continued, the children were sensational, but we were narrowly defeated by Granton Primary, Lambeth. We were runners-up by six points, reversing last year’s result. We are all immensely proud of our talented, hard-working, skilful and sporty children: the second best in London! b) Next Tuesday our Y3/4 squad will compete in a local Sportshall Athletics tournament. 2) FOOTBALL: We have resumed our matches in the Tooting Primary league, every Thursday. Last week we played two matches, winning one and losing the other.
2. DAVID BECKHAM FOOTBALL ACADEMY EVENT: On Sunday 13/2/11 Morris Tolaram, Ty Van Brown, Richard Huie, Patrice Tolaram, Alison Bolton, Matthew Friday, Abdullah Warsame, accompanied by parents Emily Giles, Anne Marie Duke and Christine Witty took 41 of our Y3/4/5/6 to a day’s training at this prestigious event in Greenwich, sponsored by Standard Chartered bank and Liverpool FC! Our children were magnificent and had a day’s expert coaching as well as receiving free kits, footballs and other goodies. Joseph B (Y3) and ex-pupil Tijani were also selected to be mascots and marched out at Anfield when Liverpool played Manchester United last week!
3. SAINSBURY’S ACTIVE KIDS VOUCHERS: We are again participating in this very worthwhile scheme. Last year we collected over 50,000 vouchers and received additional coaching in a range of sports and also sports equipment for the Foundation Stage. Please send your vouchers in to the collecting box in the main office. PLEASE HELP US TO COLLECT AS MANY AS POSSIBLE.
4. TESCO VOUCHERS: We are also collecting these vouchers so please send these into the office, too. Thank you.
5. CAKE SALE: Thank you for your support with the cake sale last Friday in aid of The Stroke Association. We raised over £300!
6. CYCLING ‘THE BIG PEDAL’: Richard Huie explains that this term we are taking part in the Big Pedal. This is a bike race from 7-25th March and it is powered by Sustrans, funded by The Bike Hub. This helps us work towards the Silver Bike-It mark and the more people who cycle, the closer we get to achieving the award. Follow our progress at http://thebigpedal.org.uk/. Please make use of the bike racks now that the weather is improving. Please be aware that you MUST secure your bicycle with a lock/chain and that the school cannot accept any responsibility for damaged or stolen cycles. Could you please also dissuade your child (and any adults!) from cycling in the playground.
7. PLAYGROUND – BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL: May I remind all parents that children are not allowed to play unsupervised before or after school anywhere in the playground, especially the sports pitch. I am delighted that families and children want to use the facilities but children must be directly supervised and are your responsibility. Staff are on duty from 8:30am. Also, for Health and Safety reasons, I am sorry but ex-pupils are not allowed to play. They are simply too big and strong and accidents will happen. Kids’ City after school care has use of the playground from 4:00pm.
8. RED NOSE DAY 18th March: Next Friday is Comic Relief Red Nose Day. We always support this charity and there are a variety of activities planned. If children wish to participate we would like them to wear something red and bring in a minimum of £1. We will also be watching various related film clips during the week, showing where the money goes. Please note there are no Friday worksharing assemblies for parents that day.
9. CHESS CLUB: Thanks to the generosity of the PTA Ewa Stevens reports that we now have an additional 15 chess sets which enables even more children to play, lunchtimes Thursdays and Fridays.
10. CLOTHES RECYCLING: TRAID have installed a clothing bank at our school! We can now recycle our unwanted clothing and shoes.
TRAID is a charity (297489) working to make the nations’ unwanted clothes matter. We do this by diverting textiles from landfill at our network of over 950 textile recycling banks throughout the UK. After hand sorting, we resell the best donations through TRAID’s 10 London charity shops. The profits raised support projects tackling global poverty, exploitation in global supply chains and projects establishing environmental sustainability in some of the world’s poorest communities. For more information please visit www.traid.org.uk.
As well as the opportunity to support TRAID our school will be receiving:
• 30 pence per kilogram (£300 per tonne) for all clothes and pairs of shoes collected through our clothing bank!
• Access to TRAIDS educational resources: They are presenting an assembly to help launch the scheme
• Marketing materials to raise awareness of textile recycling.
• Regular updates telling us how much the school has diverted from landfill and the CO2e saved.
• The TRAID newspaper.
All of this is free! We only ask parents, teachers and pupils are aware of and use the new service. The bin is by the other recycling facilities in the main playground.
11. PTA RUGBY AND BEER FESTIVAL: Niall Barratt has again organised this event for Saturday 19th March, after the success of last year. More details tba
12. EASTER EGG RAFFLE: We will be organizing our annual Easter Egg raffle in the last week of term (we are a Healthy School, but everyone needs chocolate now and then!) All proceeds to Yameriga.
13. PTA PARTY/DISCO: Don’t forget tonight’s party/disco with a live band! Starts at 8:00pm, tickets £5. Adults only.
Best Wishes
Alan Millington
