RECEPTION
Our Topics This Term
This half-term our topics will be Technology, Storytelling and 'Good to be me'. We will be
- thinking about the technology we use each day
- looking at ways to communicate
- exploring the different forms of transport we can use
- asking the question 'What is energy?"
- storytelling with 'The Little Red Hen' and making bread
Our special topic book will be 'The Iron Man". This will be the first chapter book we will read as a class and is always a favourite.
We will be continuing our handwriting each day from 8:45 until 9:00 am so it is very important that you arrive at school on time.
In maths we will begin telling the time and finding out when things happen. We will be recapping addition and subtraction using Numicon and using the correct vocabulary with words like 'plus', 'altogether', 'equals' and 'the same as'. We will also be counting in 2s and 10s and finishing with some thinking skills.
In THRASS, we will be continuing the 'Phoneme of the week' starting with 'ing' and moving through 'panda' to 'letter'.
We will also be talking a lot about why it is 'great to be me'. What things do we do well, what makes us special and what makes others special as well?
Finally, we will be beginning our special topic of 'Question Time'. What question have you always wanted to know the answer to?
This Week (21st - 24th February)
Topic Work
This week we will be introducing our Technology topic by exploring the devices we use each day. From the alarm clock that wakes us up, to the toaster at breakfast, the computer in the classroom and the car that drives us home. We will also be looking at the way technology has changed for children over the last 100 years.
Phoneme of the week
We continue our Phoneme of the Week with a slightly different letter choice. It will be 'ing' as in 'king', 'running' and 'sting'. Please encourage your child to bring in items containing this week's phoneme.
Maths
This week, we will be looking a time. We will be finding out when things happen and telling the time on the hour and at half past.
Question Time
On Friday, we begin our new session answering questions and discovering new things about the world. During the week, we will be encouraging the children to add questions to our Question Wall and then on Friday's, we will discuss what we think the answer might be.
Information
School start time
Please remember, school starts at 8:45. The children start handwriting as soon as they come in and have put away their coats and book bags so it is disruptive if other children come in late. We really appreciate your efforts in getting your children to school on time.
Lining up
Please can your children be in line, outside the classroom, when the bell rings at 8:45. Thank you.
Clothes
It is always really helpful if the children's clothes are clearly labelled. It will prevent items going missing. This is especially important as the weather gets colder and the children start bringing in hats, scarves and gloves.
Shoes
If your child cannot tie laces, please can they wear slip-on shoes or shoes with Velcro. It is dangerous for children when they are running around with untied laces.
Reception Fund
The fund contribution is £7 for this half term. Please remember that your £1 each week is invaluable to us, and is greatly appreciated not only for everyday resources (such as cooking ingredients) but also is put towards more significant events such as trips.
Covered area
Please remember that the area underneath the shelter at the rear of the Reception classrooms is out of bounds before and after school.
PE
Each Monday, the children take part in a PE lesson. It is very important that the children wear appropriate shoes that are suitable for outside running.
Borrowed Clothes
If your child comes home wearing clothes borrowed from school, please could you wash and return them as soon as possible.
