Year 5 home guide
Year 5 Home Guide Spring Term (Second Half)
Welcome to the Year 5 Home Guide!
Please use this Home Guide to support any work which you may choose to do with your child at home. The objective of this guide is to provide parents with suggestions for activities which will reinforce the learning taking place at school. Please go through this pack with your child. It contains information about what we are covering this term, including:
Literacy:
Spellings for the term - please go through these with your child. Children will have a spelling test each week. We also include details about the topics we are covering in class.
Maths:
A summary of the topics we are covering this term, and a list of the multiplication and division tables we will be expecting the children to know by the end of the year.
Plus: Ideas for activities to reinforce learning with your child in other subjects across the curriculum.
Why a Home Guide?
The idea behind the home guide is to make more effective use of your children’s time, both in school, and at home. Having reviewed the school’s practice regarding homework, it has emerged that setting pupils weekly worksheets may not be the most effective form of assessment, both in terms of time taken, and assessment data provided. Pupils are already given extensive opportunities to have their learning assessed in school. We would like to see if we can instead give parents information about the curriculum being covered in school so as to extend and reinforce children’s learning
If you have any questions with regards to this policy, please feel free to ask a member of the school’s senior management team. We are interested to see how this approach works, and will be taking your feedback in due course. Furthermore, if any parents or carers have any questions about Maths strategies, you can speak to Mrs Furnell at the regular Maths surgeries she will be hosting. More details about these will be made available shortly. The children will also participate in ‘The Passport to Numeracy’, which will help develop the children’s skills and confidence in number.
All of the weekly spellings are provided here in advance, as are the important multiplication and division tables which we will be learning, and regularly testing the children on. We will be testing pupils on spellings every week, and the dates for these tests are provided here.
Finally, we would like to urge you to read regularly with your child. As the government emphasises:
“Regular reading at home, especially reading with parents should be encouraged.” http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/management/atoz/h/homework/
We will of course be continuing with regular Guided Reading sessions at school.
We hope this guide is helpful. Please do not feel that you have to cover everything that has been suggested here. We hope it will give you a chance to enjoy reinforcing the learning that your children are experiencing at school – rest assured however, we are going to be covering everything mentioned here, in depth, in school.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding any of the topics contained in this Home Guide.
Happy learning!
Literacy Topics:
These are the topics we will be covering this half term in class, and suggested activities for parents and children.
Non fiction: Report writing and explanation texts
This half term, we will be planning, composing, editing and refining reports. We will also be reading and analysing a range of explanatory texts, investigating and noting the features of this style.
Activities
Choose a factual topic of interest to your child. Ask them to pose questions they would like to find out about it and locate the answers using an information text, such as an encyclopedia. Encourage them to explain in their own words what they have found out.
Poetic Style
• Enjoy reading a range of poems with your child and discuss the elements and features of these poems, for instance the effect of the language used, patterns and rhythms.
• Encourage your child to perform the poem, using facial and vocal expression – feel free to join in!

Literacy: Spelling Words
On the following pages you will find the spelling words which we will be covering each week. Please use the say, look, cover, write, check method as used in previous years for learning spellings. The expectation is that children should not just learn words for the weekly spelling test, but should be using these words in their writing in school. Please help your child learn the words which correspond to their group. We suggest your child practises their spellings for ten minutes a day.

Maths:
By Year 5 your child should be secure in their knowledge of the following:
•Multiplication and division facts up to 10 x 10.
•Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.
•Using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Suggested activities to strengthen the above:
•Practise times tables with your child on a regular basis. (Several 10min. sessions over the course of the week are more effective than an hour chunk).
•When shopping, ask your child to round up the prices of the items in your trolley before you get to the check-out.
•Talk about the symbols +, -, x, ÷, = with your child. Encourage them to explain what they mean and to give examples of how to use them in calculations.
In the spring term, we will be teaching the second cycle of maths. This covers the same topics that were covered in the Autumn term but does so in more depth and with increased complexity in problem solving.
(For more information on each of the topic areas see: http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/primary/primaryframework/mathematics/planning/Year5 )
Suggested Activities
Discuss train, tube or bus timetables with your child quizzing them about time of destination etc. Check their understanding of the 24 hour clock.
•When you are shopping, ask your child to calculate how much change you will receive. If items are discounted, encourage them to work out the sale prices using percentage calculations.
•At mealtimes, discuss how food is divided among family members (e.g. pizza, pies etc.). This can aid understanding with fractions.
•When out and about, encourage your child to identify different 2D and 3D shapes in their environment. Discuss how geometric shapes are used in a range of contexts e.g. architecture, parks, sports facilities etc.
•Look at graphs or diagrams in various publications and discuss why information is presented in this way.

Science
This half term, we will focus on Gases. By the end of this module, the children will know more about different types of gases, where they come from and how we use them.
Science Glossary for this unit
Air – a mixture of gases. It is all around us.
Argon – the third most common gas in air.
Carbon dioxide – the fourth most common gas in air.
Evaporation – when a liquid changes into a gas.
Freezing – when a material changes form a liquid to a solid at a cold temperature, such as in a freezer.
Liquid – a material in a form that flows and can change shape. Its volume stays the same.
Melting – when a material changes form a solid to a liquid.
Gas – a material in a form that flows easily and can change shape and volume.
Oxygen – the second most common gas in air.
Nitrogen – the most common gas in air.
Volume – the amount of space something takes up.
Suggested activities:
•Encourage your child to observe gases in your home environment e.g. steam when the kettle is boiling, the gas in fizzy drinks, air in car/bicycle tyres etc.
•Discuss the purpose of some of these gases and how they are useful to us in our everyday lives. Also highlight any dangers associated with some types of gases and precautions that need to be taken when handling or exposed to them.
